One-Tank Trip: Watch planes take off at this runway park
GREENVILLE, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - When you think of airports, do you think of a destination you can fly to?
In this week’s One-Tank Trips, we visited the Greenville Downtown Airport, where they want to be a destination worth driving to.
Planes fill the sky above the airport’s Runway Park.
After walking through the fuselage at the entrance, you’ll be introduced to a mini-runway and a whole lot of aviation-themed play areas.
Taylor Lewis loves bringing her daughter, Conley.
MORE ONE-TANK TRIPS:
- Visit the Angel Oak Tree, more than 400 years old
- Visit mounds at ancient Native American town
- Take a roller-coaster ride down a mountain
- Try tubing down a snow-covered slope
- Immerse yourself in the world of college football
- Have some big fun with small trains
“To come here and just watch the airplanes, it just fascinates her,” said Lewis. “This has quickly become one of our favorite spots.”
Greenville Downtown Airport is South Carolina’s largest general aviation airport, which means it doesn’t have commercial service. But last year, it had more than 85,000 flights.
If you visit, there’s a good chance you’ll see a plane every five or 10 minutes.
Public Relations Director Robert Hoover said: “If you love aviation, if you love watching planes take off and land, if you just like being around planes in general, this is the place to be.”
He says the airport created this community corridor to inspire kids to love aviation.
Besides the park, it also has a military history museum, café and aviation-themed mini-golf course.
For Lewis, having a place like this to take her daughter is a big win.
“She loves this playground, and we love watching the planes, and when you come on a Friday, they are constantly going, and it’s really fun,” she said.
The Greenville Downtown Airport is three miles away from Greenville’s city center.
The park is open every day, and it’s free to go to. The rest of it is only open on certain days and times, so be sure to check their website before going.
