AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Saturday was National Puppy Day and the Aiken Animal Shelter took the day to try and get some dogs and cats adopted.

There are more options than just adopting an animal.

The Aiken County Animal Shelter is asking for volunteers to help out around the shelter and for foster volunteers to take in puppies to help them get used to being around people.

One adoption counselor at the shelter spoke with us about some of the benefits of fostering for families and dogs.

Bob Gordon, an adoption counselor, says, “Most of them are small and have to get that nurturing environment and they can get that at home. Plus, it’s quieter, and fostering is a great way for kids to learn responsibility and families to work on a project tomorrow.”

The shelter is open every day but Sunday for people to come by, see the animals, adopt, or volunteer.

Puppies are 35 dollars and cats are 10 dollars this week.
