Book Bash kicks off summer program that helps kids with reading
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Augusta-Richmond County Public Library hosted a community event, Book Bash, to kick off an annual free summer reading program on Saturday.
The Augusta-Richmond County Public Library teamed up with Rise Augusta and the United Way of the CSRA to host the event at Pendleton King Park on Saturday.
With school out for the summer, literacy rates decline, and children can lose up to three months of reading progress.
The impact can be even greater in parts of the csra where access is lower to books and enrichment opportunities.
This year in the CSRA, only 33% of students are reading at average or proficient levels.
The Book Bash hopes to cultivate an excitement for reading while also combating this issue.
We spoke to a mother in Richmond County who has found a way to make her kids excited about reading.
“I’ve introduced them to Amelia Bedelia and The Babysitter’s Club and Goosebumps, the old book series by R.L Stine, and different books that I read when I was their age, and a lot of times it does capture their attention,” said Jacquetta Williams, Richmond County mother.
Community and families were able to participate in book giveaways.
The summer reading program at the library is free this summer to help combat the summer knowledge slide as kids are out of school.
Richmond County residents of all ages are invited to participate in the annual program.
This year’s theme is Adventure Begins at Your Library.
Read, earn prizes (while supplies last), and participate in fun and free programs over the summer.
