AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A fast-food favorite in much of the rest of the country aims to expand to Augusta.

Jack in the Box has signed a deal to open 15 new restaurants across Georgia as part of its growth in the Southeast – and Augusta is one of the target markets, along with Macon and Savannah, according to a news report from Verdict Food Service.

There aren’t any Jack in the Boxes in Georgia, so this is new territory for the chain.

Thanks to a partnership with Destination Augusta, the festival will feature platinum-selling Austin alt-rock band Fastball on the Global Stage on Sept. 21 and jazz sensation Georgia Muldrow on the Jazz Stage.

Jack in the Box sells the usual fare of burgers, chicken sandwiches, milkshakes and breakfast items.

But the 24-hour snacks like tiny tacos, eggrolls and Buffalo wings have a cult following all their own.

After the initial 15 locations in Georgia, the chain hopes to expand further.

The announcement follows the expansion of Whataburger in Georgia in the past couple of years. The chain has focused largely on the Atlanta area – although News 12 has frequently asked if Whataburger plans to come here.

A public relations professional recently wrote back to us: “Whataburger’s Georgia growth is concentrated in and around the Atlanta-Athens area through 2025. However, you will be the first to know if and when they plan an Augusta location.”

“Summer means more time with family, more time by the pool and more time indulging in our favorite treats, and nothing says a perfect summer day like sunshine and Kroger Brand ice cream,” said Juan De Paoli.

Although locals may Augusta locations of What-A-Burger – with hyphens – that’s an entirely different chain that only shares a similar name.

In fact, Texas-based Whataburger just this week sued North Carolina’s What-A-Burgers, alleging trademark infringement.

San Diego-based Jack in the Box has 2,200 locations in 22 states and also owns the Del Taco chain, with 600 locations.
