Ex-GOP chair accused of stealing from party in Lexington County

LEXINGTON, S.C. (WIS) - The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division charged the former chairman of the Lexington County Republican Party after accusing him of stealing thousands of dollars from two organizations he helped lead.

Craig Thomas Caldwell, 42, was charged on Friday with two counts of breach of trust with fraudulent intent, value of $10,000 or more.

According to an arrest warrant, Caldwell took $61,591 from the Lexington County Republican Party bank while serving as chairman. Caldwell reportedly transferred the funds into his personal bank . He held the position of chairman from 2016 until April 2023.

Officials said there were a total of 147 transfers from 2018 through 2023.

Caldwell itted to covering the transfers up by falsifying monthly treasurer’s reports to submit to the other of the party, according to SLED.

Arrest warrants stated Caldwell also took $52,300 in funds from the Lexington Rotary Club Foundation between May 16, 2023 and March 23, 2024. He reportedly wrote 11 checks to himself from the foundation while he was the organization’s treasurer.

The document stated Caldwell attempted to hide the withdrawals from other board by not putting the checks into QuickBooks, the ing software used by the organization.

“The [Rotary] Club was able to get the money back after requesting it from Caldwell. He was released from his position and we will continue to cooperate with SLED,” a spokesperson with the Rotary Club of Lexington said. “No further comment at this time.”

Caldwell was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center but was released shortly after his arrest after meeting the conditions of his bond.
