Bristow was shot while serving a warrant in a child exploitation case. The 30-year-old died Friday after spending several days in the ICU at Grady Memorial Hospital.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office says protecting children and pets from abuse was his “ion” as a deputy.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Keith Jiles said the community has come together to Bristow’s family and law enforcement colleagues.

“You try not to think it’s going to happen, but it could happen to any of these guys at anytime and that’s what they live on a daily basis,” he said. “They never know what the day holds. It’s just awesome that the community could come together and them and be there for them.”

Bristow is survived by his wife and two children.

Shane Davis is the founder of West Georgia First Responders, a nonprofit that’s already raised over $47,000 for Bristow’s family.

“Whether it’s food, whether it’s lodging, whether it’s maybe mortgage assistant, bills they got,” he explained. We’re eventually sitting down with the family and seeing how we can give them money back and disperse it into what they can actually use it as.”
