‘I’m not going to jail’: Graniteville man arrested, attempts to escape custody

BEECH ISLAND, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A Graniteville man attempted to escape deputy custody after being arrested on Sunday, according to an incident report from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

46-year-old Larry Turner was arrested by deputies after trying to flee from custody while being assisted by hospital staff in a wheelchair.

Officials say Turner was actively wanted by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office for armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime following a December of 2023 incident.

Prior to the escape attempt, the incident report states that during a traffic stop, information was obtained regarding Turner’s whereabouts.

Upon arrival at 4874 Jefferson Davis Highway, Ashley Motel, deputies observed a Black male matching Turner’s description and began to call for him to come out of the room with his hands up.

Deputies say Turner refused to exit the room and saw him along with a woman, running frantically around the room and bathroom.

Turner eventually exited the room and was taken into custody without incident.

While in the backseat of the patrol vehicle, Turner became unresponsive, according to the incident report.

EMS responded and two doses of Narcan were istered to Turner. Turner was then transported to the emergency room for further evaluation.

According to deputies, Turner then stood up from the wheelchair, shouted “I’m not going to jail”, and began running towards the hospital parking lot.

After a brief struggle and foot pursuit, Turner was eventually captured near Medical Park Drive.

Turner was taken to the Aiken County Detention Center, where he faces charges of armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and escape. Where his bond was set at 80,000, according to inmate bookings.
