New Whataburger opens just a short drive from Augusta
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Augusta still doesn’t have a Whataburger, but the cult favorite Texas-based fast-food chain has opened its doors just an hour and 15 minutes away.
It held a grand opening Monday at 1185 Dutch Fork Road in Irmo, S.C.
Jack in the Box plans to open locations in Augusta
Jack in the Box has signed a deal to open 15 new restaurants across Georgia as part of its growth in the Southeast – and Augusta is one of the target markets, along with Macon and Savannah, according to a news report from Verdict Food Service.

A Columbia location will open soon at 202 Bridgeberry Lane.
The Irmo opening was eagerly anticipated by Midlands residents. Some customers spent the night at the new restaurant just to get their orders first.
This comes on the heels of other Whataburger locations opening up around Georgia and South Carolina – but none in the CSRA.
When we asked the company about it a few months ago, they said if they planned to open an Augusta location, we’d be the first to know.
Up until now, the Covington, Ga., location – which has been open only a short time – was just about the closest Whataburger to Augusta.
Waffle House president and CEO dies at 58
Walt Ehmer, who had been overseeing the popular breakfast restaurant chain Waffle House since 2012, ed away at the age of 58.

Longtime locals may a chain by a similar name, What-A-Burger, that had locations here. The hyphenated chain is no relation, and in fact is being sued by Whataburger over the name.
