SALLEY, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A man who had an active bench warrant escaped arrest and led deputies on a chase for almost two hours, we learned from authorities Tuesday.

Aiken County deputies say they responded Friday to the 100 block of Inkberry Road after being told that Samuel Antonio Cheatham, 37, of Aiken, had an active bench warrant and was living there.

State prison officials had told Richard Moore this month he could choose the method for his Nov. 1 execution. State law had given him until Friday to decide.

Deputies said when they arrived, they met with multiple people who repeatedly said Cheatham was not there.

When the Wagener police chief spoke to the individuals, they itted to Cheatham being in the home and permitted them to check the residence, according to authorities.

Authorities say they found Cheatham in a small room behind multiple laundry hampers, hiding under clothes.

Authorities say Cheatham resisted arrest.

While being transferred, Cheatham then escaped from Wagener police and ran through the backyard while still handcuffed, according to authorities.

Authorities say a dog team and drone team helped locate Cheatham after an hour and a half. He was lying down behind farm equipment, authorities said.

Cheatham was secured once again and transported to Aiken County Detention Center, where his bench warrant was to be served, authorities say.

He was charged with attempted escape, resisting arrest, petit or simple larceny and driving under suspension, according to jail records.
