AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - On Monday, we told you how the Family YMCA of Greater Augusta is working to get hundreds of pallets of water to North Carolina schools, and now we have an update.

A couple of companies have already stepped up to help.

KAMO loaded up one of their tractor-trailers Thursday morning.

Water is headed to the Family Y in Asheville, where it will be distributed to 20 local schools that need drinkable water as they head back to the classroom.

Wesley United Methodist Church in Evans has gathered volunteers from around and outside the area to help with the cleanup.

“It’s really a humbling moment at a time like this when people have been through so much in this region and all the way to the Asheville area to even know we can be a part of this,” said Travis McNeal, vice president of operations at KAMO.

Cheryl Wirt, CFO of Family YMCA of Greater Augusta, said: “You know the Y is all about serving their communities and for us this means near and far. The Y has always said since its inception what is the need and how can we do that for our community.”

After Thursday’s delivery, there are more than 100 pallets of water left, so the Family Y is still looking for more trucks and drivers.

The YMCA is continuing to partner with Golden Harvest, providing food at all nine of their locations through their food pantry.

Non-perishable items are available every day and can be picked up when they are open.

The YMCA is also helping families receiving services or FEMA assistance at the Hub by providing childcare.

“We want to make sure that everyone knows that the YMCA is there to take care of their kids, so they can concentrate on getting their FEMA efforts going and started,” said Catie McCauley, chief operating officer at the Family YMCA of Greater Augusta. “We’re there to provide that safe childcare for them.”
