MARTINEZ, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The recovery from Hurricane Helene continues across the region, and volunteers were out at Camp Tanglewood to help on Saturday.

Organizers at the Girl Scout Camp in Grovetown said this was the first time it was safe really safe enough to have volunteers really come out to help with the cleanup.

Five cabins in two areas were lost, along with a ton of trees that came down.

Organizers estimate that more than 200 trees have come down.

The Children’s Hospital of Georgia’s annual fundraiser to help patients and their families is now over, and it ends with a big check.

Despite the healthy amount of volunteers, the process of recovering will take a good amount of time.

“Our intention is to have the camp usable for summer camp. We have several units we need to replace. So, it will be a much more limited camp experience than before. But ultimately, it will probably take us a couple of years I think, and a lot of fundraising,” said Cheryl Legette, COO for Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia.

Organizers say they plan to have a few more camp cleanup days in the coming months, depending on the weather.
