Columbia County hospital ‘still on track’ for 2026 opening
GROVETOWN, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Columbia County’s new and only hospital looks to meet its 2026 projected opening date.
They were targeting mid-2026 for the end of construction, and Lisa Kaylor with Wellstar MCG Health tells us, they are still on track.
Kaylor says they are over 50% complete with the hospital construction schedule and that the work is currently focused on the facade and sheathing on the outside of the building.
We are told interior framing and rough-ins are also underway.
Planned for years and held up for quite some time in litigation, the hospital became a reality after the groundbreaking ceremony back in April.
It was originally planned by what was then Augusta University Health. But when a new partnership put Wellstar in the driver’s seat, the health care provider committed to moving forward with the hospital on Gateway Boulevard near Interstate 20.

It will soon be a 100-bed hospital with a level 2 trauma center and diagnostic imaging.
It’s a process that started back in 2012 and will be the first of its kind in Columbia County, offering services that people in the area or more rural counties would typically have to drive farther for.
When the Wellstar Columbia County Medical Center and adjacent medical office building opens, the full-service acute care hospital will feature:
- An emergency department planned to be a Level II trauma center.
- A surgical platform that will include operating rooms, cath labs, interventional radiology and endoscopy.
- A 90,000-square-foot medical office building that will include primary care, women’s health and other specialties.
Kaylor tells us that staffing plans are already in development, and more information surrounding that will become available in 2025.
