‘Gut-wrenched’: S.C. community mourns teen killed at fun park

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office and the Greenville County Coroner’s Office said an investigation is underway after a tragic accident at Frankie’s Fun Park.

According to the sheriff’s office, an incident occurred Friday involving a forklift and a go-cart at the park, 45 Park Woodruff Drive.

Dispatchers received a 911 call at 11:43 a.m.

Tornadoes touched down during storms over the weekend in South Carolina and Georgia, according to the National Weather Service.

The coroner confirmed 17-year-old Kamel Seveion Sewell of Simpsonville was killed in the collision. Sewell was an employee at the park.

Sewell was operating the go-cart when it collided with an industrial forklift, which was also being operated by a park employee.

On Sunday, the coroner said Sewell’s cause of death was blunt-force injury of the head. His manner of death has been ruled accidental.

Frankie’s Fun Park released the following statement regarding the incident:

”Frankie’s Fun Park of Greenville regrets to announce that on Friday, December 27th, a tragic accident occurred that resulted in the loss of Seveion Sewell, 17. Seveion worked at Frankie’s for over a year. At this time, Frankie’s is providing information and assistance to both law enforcement and OSHA. When the circumstances and causes of the accident are determined, additional information will be related, as appropriate. It is with a heavy heart that we share this news. Please keep Seveion and his family in your thoughts.” Sewell was an 11th-grade student at Fountain Inn High School.

Greenville County schools extended its deepest condolences to Sewell’s family and the entire school community.

Ryan James, the Sewell family’s attorney, released the following statement:

”The family is in considerable mourning. In fact, I’d candidly say, gut-wrenched. After my meeting with them this morning, it became clear they want answers. They deserve that much. As the day has progressed, my office has began to undertake the process of fact-finding, with all eyes on causation, as well as the ‘who’. As this matter moves forward, we’ll update. At this time, the family requests privacy as they grieve the loss of their loved one.”
