MONETTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Aiken County Coroner’s Office is investigating a shooting death, according to authorities.

The victim was identified as 21-year-old Remedee Jennings-Leaphart, authorities say.

On Thursday at 9:08 p.m., the Coroner’s Office was called to the Lexington Medical Center to investigate the shooting death of a Batesburg-Leesville man.

GBI, sheriff looking into Jefferson County child death

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in the case of a child death earlier this month.

The shooting occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. in the 100 block of Pine Circle in Monetta.

The victim was initially driven by an unknown person(s) to his mother’s residence in Batesburg-Leesville, and his family then drove him to a medical clinic in Batesburg-Leesville, where Lexington County EMS was called to transport him to Lexington Medical Center.

The victim was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival at 8:35 p.m. from a gunshot wound to the body, according to authorities.

He will be autopsied on Friday in Newberry.

The Coroner’s Office along with the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office are continuing with the investigation.

The year is off to a deadly start for the CSRA, with four murders or suspicious deaths in Augusta, two homicides in Aiken, one in Waynesboro and one in Sparta.

The slayings are among the latest in a more than two-year outbreak of violent crime that’s claimed about 200 lives across the CSRA.

Communities large and small have been affected on both sides of the Savannah River.
