Costco shoppers seen stockpiling hundreds of eggs into carts amid nationwide shortage
MONTCLAIR, Calif. (Gray News) – A viral video on TikTok shows customers at a Costco store stockpiling dozens of eggs into their carts amid the nationwide egg shortage.
The woman who took the video said it happened the morning of Jan. 29 at a Costco store in California. She said all the eggs were gone within 10 minutes of the store opening.
Commenters on the TikTok video are saying the customers appear greedy, with one writing, “Reminds me of the toilet paper craze during covid.”
Since then, Costco confirmed to CNN on Monday that it is limiting customers to three packages of eggs, which are typically sold in two-dozen or four-dozen cartons.
Costco isn’t the only grocery chain that is setting a limit on how many eggs you can buy. Also on Monday, Trader Joe’s announced it is limiting customers to one dozen eggs as it deals with ongoing supply issues.
Kroger said while it is not setting a company-wide limit on eggs, some of its locations are choosing to do so based on availability.
Other companies like Waffle House are choosing a different approach. The popular breakfast chain announced last week that it is adding a 50-cent upcharge for every egg.
The bird flu has forced farmers to cull more than 40 million egg-laying birds in 2024.
The short supply of eggs has caused them to be more expensive, and the agriculture department predicts the cost of eggs will increase another 20% before the end of the year.
