AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A well-respected Irish-American leader was honored Friday in a wreath-laying ceremony.

Dennis Cahill lost his life heroically, rescuing a young girl from the Augusta Canal in 1902.

The Irish community gathered at the canal near Butt Memorial Bridge, where Cahill’s memorial lies.

A new mural was made possible by the Lucy C. Laney Museum of Black History, the city of Augusta and other community groups.

Jefferey Ryan, historian for the Ancient Order of Hibernians, explains, “We always put a wreath on his monument the week before St. Patrick’s day. If nothing else, at least during this time, we like our local Augusta community to realize we have an Irish-American hero in our midst.”

Ryan says the Augusta Canal Authority is hoping to raise funds to relocate the monument nearby.
