COLUMBIA, S.C. (WMBF) - The entire state of South Carolina is currently under a burn ban.

The ban, initially announced by the South Carolina Forestry Commission, has been in effect since March 21.

This comes amid recent weather conditions throughout the state, such as extremely low humidity and breezy winds.

“The combination of gusty winds and low relative humidity is a recipe for wildfires igniting easily and spreading rapidly,” SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones said. “Especially when you add to the mix the abundance of dry, late-winter fuels on the ground.”

According to the SCFC, the agency’s burn ban prohibits all “outdoor burning, including yard debris burning, prescribed burning, campfires, bonfires and other recreational fires in all unincorporated areas of the state.”

SCFC originally issued a Red Flag Alert on March 20, which initiated some burn bans at the local level, before announcing the state burn ban.

The burn ban for the state will stay in place until further notice.
