AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Being a first responder is not an easy job, and it truly takes a special person to fulfill that role.

We’re talking about the people who lay their lives on the line daily to help save ours.

On Tuesday, the Gold Cross recognized two local paramedics as their First Friday Hero.

Tyler Scarbary and Michael Stead say they were finishing up a case when they jumped into action to help a patient crying out for help last month at Piedmont.

Both say they just did what they were trained to do to save the person’s life.

As the parents of three young kids, Holly and Noah McBride noticed there was something missing in Columbia County.

They say they are humbled to receive this honor.

“We don’t deserve it, you know? It’s just something we do every day,” said Michael Stead and Tyler Scarberry. “We don’t deserve recognition for it. You know, we’re here to help others. We should be recognizing everybody who’s in an ambulance and in the hospital.”

Stead says he has been in emergency services for 25 years now.

Scarbary is in training right now, but soon he’ll be advancing to the next step in his career.
