GREENVILLE, S.C. (WHNS/Gray News) - South Carolina officials are calling a shooting that took the life of a child senseless.

According to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Belle Meade Apartments at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday regarding a shooting.

Deputies at the scene said they found multiple people with gunshot wounds in what appears to be a gang-related shooting.

According to Greenville County Sheriff Hobart Lewis, two 5-year-old twins were among those shot, along with an 18-year-old, who is expected to survive.

Authorities said one of the twin boys has died from their injuries while his brother remains at the hospital in critical condition.

“This is insane,” Lewis said. “Such a senseless act. It truly makes our blood boil.”

The sheriff’s office said it obtained a video that showed groups shooting at each other with at least two shooters involved in the exchange of gunfire.

Authorities said two people have been arrested in connection with the shooting while they search for more suspects.

“We’re going to find you,” Lewis said. “We’re going to lock you up.”

Shawnteza La Shay Sherman, 31, was charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder and criminal conspiracy.

Greenville County authorities said a juvenile was also charged with a weapons-related offense for possessing a firearm while under the age of 18.

“Obviously, these guys don’t care who they shoot at or what they shoot,” Lewis said. “These guys are idiots. They’re thugs and they need to be off the street.”

Deputies are asking anyone with information regarding the shooting to the sheriff’s office at 864-271-5210.
