In honor of James Brown, his family created a scholarship, and applications will be open Saturday.

Mom, 3 daughters to graduate from Georgia State on same day

At Georgia State University, four of the Lee family will cross the stage on the same day this year.

“Education was always important to our father,” said Dr. Deanna Brown-Thomas, daughter of the CSRA native and president of the James Brown Family Foundation. “He believed deeply in the power of knowledge, discipline, and self-expression. Through this scholarship, we hope to carry on his commitment to uplifting young people and inspiring the next generation of artists and leaders.”

The James Brown’s Don’t Be A Dropout Scholarship Fund will be istered annually and will students from underrepresented communities who demonstrate academic promise, artistic potential, and a dedication to community service.

Ga. Tech graduation speaker vows to help cover startup costs

Georgia Tech’s commencement speaker left graduates with more than inspiring words Friday — he promised to cover incorporation costs for any graduate launching a startup.

Known globally for his musical talent and energetic performances, James Brown also quietly ed causes close to his heart, including education, youth mentorship and social justice.

The foundation also currently issues scholarships for one of its original music programs - J.A.M.P (James Brown Academy of Musik Pupils).

“We are not just preserving his music — we are preserving his mission,” said Dr. Yamma Brown, one of Brown’s daughters and vice president of the foundation. “This is about more than honoring the past; it’s about investing in the future.”
