AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A new historical marker in Augusta was revealed on Sunday.

The Georgia Historical Society presented the Congregation of Children of Israel Synagogue Sunday afternoon. The synagogue opened in 1846 as an Orthodox religious organization.

Jewish migration to Augusta increased until 1924, when the Immigration Act limited eastern European Jewish immigration.

Angela Russo, the Museum Manager for the Augusta Jewish Museum, explained the importance of the marker.

“It’s incredibly important to the Jewish community, specifically in Augusta,” said Russo. “I feel that a lot of people aren’t aware of the Jewish community. They’re not aware of other cultural groups outside of their own. So, it’s good to share that history in any way we can and invite them to seek out the history throughout Augusta.”

The Augusta Jewish Museum applied for the marker in 2021 and went through a lengthy process to get approved. The synagogue is the oldest standing synagogue in Georgia.
