THE DALLES, Ore. (KPTV/Gray News) – A 3-year-old from Washington state who was reported missing from a hotel Saturday morning was found in the Columbia River and later died, according to police.

The City of The Dalles Police Department said officers were called shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday when a family reported that their child escaped their room at the Columbia River Hotel and Conference Center.

After a search, the 3-year-old was found in the Columbia River near the Oregon shoreline.

The child was rushed to a nearby hospital, but police say lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.

Police said the child was visiting the area with family.
