(Gray News) - Discount grocer Aldi announced it will be reducing prices on hundreds of items to help customers combat higher prices this summer.

The store says it is slashing prices on more than 400 products across its 2,400 U.S. stores, a move that will help customers with “sticker shock” and save shoppers $100 million over the summer months.

“While customers may see higher prices at other retailers, we’re working hard to unlock even more value for our shoppers, just in time for summer’s lineup of holidays and gatherings where food takes center stage,” Jason Hart, Aldi CEO, said.

Customers will notice lower prices on roughly 25% of Aldi’s products that include fresh meat for grilling, organic produce, snacks and other summer favorites, the company said.

The United States Department of Agriculture predicted a moderate increase in overall food prices this year, with grocery prices expected to rise 3.3% or higher.

Aldi representatives said the discount grocery chain operates differently, while focusing on ways to save customers’ money.

“We want to do what we can to help shoppers,” Scott Patton, Aldi’s chief commercial officer, said. “Value isn’t a trend at Aldi. It’s been in our DNA since we opened our first store nearly 50 years ago,”

Aldi said it is also continuing its expansion with plans to add more than 225 stores this year across the country.
